HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOC

HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOC

January 23, 2006 Minutes

The HHSAA met in the Houston Elementary Library on January 23, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Bonnie McElroy. Other members present were Kay Honeycutt, Doris Montgomery, Sidney Bridges, Norma Bridges, Gerald & Virginia Murphy, Patty Street, Paul Ice, Terry Flowers, Jim Cavanaugh, and our latest member, Susan Warkentin.

Patty read the November 2005 minutes. Paul made a motion to approve, Sidney Ann seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Norma gave the budget report. Currently, we have $142,407.40 in assets (scholarship fund) and $4,625.85 in liquid assets. Paul made a motion to approve the budget, and Kay seconded the motion.

Sidney Ann made the motion to set up a separate checking account in which to deposit donations to the scholarship fund and the interest received from the scholarship CDs. Paul seconded the motion; it carried.

Bonnie handed out the revised rules governing our Alumni scholarship. Everyone proofread it; minor errors were found. Bonnie will make the corrections and give the revised copy to Ila Jean Farris. Paul made a motion to accept as amended; Sidney Ann seconded. Motion carried.

Three members were appointed and accepted the positions on the scholarship committee: Terry Flowers, Sidney Ann Bridges, and Norma Bridges.

Paul suggested the Hines and Covert Award winners be honored at this year's Alumni Banquet. The Covert award was originally awarded to females with a watch as the prize. The Hines was based on citizenship and a small cash prize awarded to a male. In later years, both male and female were eligible for either award. Paul indicated some names were missing. Patty said she would look in old newspapers to try to find the missing names -- then call Paul so he can update his list.

Paul made a recommendation that the Hines and Covert Award winners be honored at this year's Alumni Banquet. Kay seconded. The motion carried.

The group also listened to three potential theme songs for this year's Alumni banquet: Don't It Make You Want to Go Home?; Sentimental Journey; and Try to Remember.

The song selected was, Don't It Make You Want to Go Home?

The next meeting will be held February 27, 2006 at the Houston Elementary Library to fold newspapers. Bonnie dismissed the meeting.
